20 years of Lazybird in IT
So, today, 26th June, 2026, I complete 20 years in IT. I started with a bootcamp training on mainframe technology. Was bummed for not being put up immediately to go deliver projects using this brilliant technology with a black and green screen. And then I was put to learn something else and then something else, and I wandered aimlessly for 6 months, just following instructions of my bosses. In hindsight over the last 20 years, taking direction from leaders who trust you, who believe in you more than you do, is always a great career move.
This is not LinkedIn so will not do a lot of work talk, but want to talk through how I feel I am still the same person who joined 20 years back, with my curiosity, with my thought process and my organized to-do lists. However, I have changed because I have grown in my ability to handle uncertainities, both in life as well as work. I have come to understand from my many colleagues that we are all so diverse and my normal is someone's luxury and vice versa. And yet, we co-exist beyond those boundaries. I have learned to understand someone else's point of view might be perfectly fine and right from where they are. I just need to know that and not prove a point of who's right or wrong.
20 years makes us laugh at all the mistakes we have made growing up and how we have learned from those mistakes. I reached out to my batchmates from my first organization. Just one lone man standing there. The rest have moved out to different countries, companies and life phases. I reminiscence the 12pm sharp lunch that we used to have and all the laughs at that table would attract a lot of stares from folks. 20 years later, lunch moved to 1pm, and a new place, but I still have a hearty company, a lot of laughs and well, that is what makes it worthwhile afterall!
I was looking through my photo archives and noticed this - my desk's makeover in 20 years ! From a cubicle to a cabin and with more stuff to make it my own.
The one thing that also DID NOT change is me having fun, at work, doing work and outside of work. Two organizations, two different avatars, just for fun! I become that character that I take up- which is mostly a character that I myself design and write !
So yea, I am all geared up to enjoy the next 20 years and have a lot more fun doing what I am good at and what I love doing. Life's good. So until next 20 years, Happy working!
